Marco Kern is the work-hard, play-hard vocalist and guitarist of Austrian Heavy/Thrash Metal outfit Garagedays. With four albums already under their belts and a fifth arriving in February 2027, featuring a guest appearance from King Diamond guitarist Andy LaRocque, the band are showing no signs of slowing down.
For today’s MetalTalk Lowdown, Marco shares tales of disastrous gigs, thousands of kilometres on the road and a memorable exchange with a fan who refused to wear the band’s patch. There’s also an unexpected appreciation of Michael Jackson, a possible alternative career in the adult entertainment industry and one recurring concern: running out of beer.
What’s the most Metal thing you’ve ever done off stage?
Driving 25,000 km in our van from show to show.
What’s the worst gig you’ve ever played, and why?
In Rome, Italy, because we played three songs and had a blackout the whole time. Horror.
What’s the best gig you’ve ever played, and why?
Rock am, Härtsfeldsee Germany. Cool audience, great party.
Would you choose a platinum record or one perfect, legendary live show?
Platinum record.
What’s your greatest fear?
No beers.
What’s the trait you most deplore in yourself?
That I never give up.
What trait do you most deplore in other musicians?
Just drinking water and not being real.
Describe yourself in three words.
Fucking thirsty bastard.
What’s your guiltiest pleasure?
I love to make art with iron.
What does a great riff feel like to write?
Yeah, damn, that is it. Don’t stop, go on.
What’s the worst thing a fan has ever said to you?
That he never put on a patch with our band logo on it because he did not like the name Garagedays. I said, OK, no problem. GARAGEDAYS does not fit with these childish bands you have on your jacket.
If you weren’t in music, what would you be doing?
Maybe porn biz.
What’s one album outside your genre you secretly love?
Michael Jackson – Thriller.
When did you last cry, and why?
When I don’t know a bit of a song.
What keeps you awake at night?
A song that is in the writing process.
Riffs, royalties or recognition, if you had to choose?
Riffs.
How do you want to be remembered?
As the singer and rhythm guitar player for Garagedays.
What’s the most important lesson the road has taught you?
No shower. No money. Just you and rock ‘n’ roll.
What happens when the music stops?
I go for a drink.
