Rose Tattoo Frontman Gary ‘Angry’ Anderson Dies Aged 79

Gary ‘Angry’ Anderson, the unmistakable voice of Rose Tattoo, has died aged 79. From the Sydney pub circuit to stages around the world, his gravelly vocals and fierce presence helped make songs such as Rock ‘N’ Roll Outlaw and We Can’t Be Beaten Australian rock anthems. Anderson remained the face of the Tatts for five decades and leaves a lasting mark on hard rock.

“It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Gary ‘Angry’ Anderson on the eve of Monday 21 September 2026, surrounded by his loved ones here in Australia,” a statement from Anderson’s family and Rose Tattoo said.

“Angry was a devoted father, and much-loved member of his friends, bandmates and the wider music and entertainment community. His loss will be deeply felt by all those who knew and loved him both here in Australia and overseas.

“The family and band members are asking for privacy at this difficult time and will not be giving interviews. We kindly ask that their wishes are respected as they come to terms with this devastating loss and take time they need to grieve.

“We thank everyone for their prayers and messages of love and continued support.

“Stay young, grow strong.”

Anderson kept the Rose Tattoo flag flying right to the end. “Classic, timeless, bristling with attitude and soaked in soul, Rose Tattoo are still the ultimate hard-rocking bar band and long may they continue,” was how MetalTalk saw their Islington Assembly Hall show we covered.

“These are the real bad boys for life.”

Angry gave those words their meaning, and his voice will remain at the heart of Rose Tattoo’s legacy.
