Sverre Stokland, better known as Blodstrup, has been a fixture in the Norwegian Black Metal underground for more than three decades. As vocalist and guitarist with Tulus, the band he co-founded in the early ’90s, he has helped forge a sound built on darkness, atmosphere and uncompromising riffing, while his parallel work as Gard in Khold has added another formidable chapter to his story. Lyrics for both bands are written by his wife Hildir.
With Tulus still pushing forward and the 2026 album Morbid Desires proving there is plenty of fire left in the old darkness, Blodstrup steps into The MetalTalk Lowdown.
What’s the most Metal thing you’ve ever done off stage?
I gave my neighbour such a verbal beating they moved away. They moved two weeks ago.
What’s the worst gig you’ve ever played, and why?
It was Tulus’s first gig. It was so loud I could not hear any notes, let alone which song we were supposed to play.
What’s the best gig you’ve ever played, and why?
We played after Sepultura at Brutal Assault 2010, I believe. I had a really bad feeling about the sound when I tested a Marshall amp. But that feeling switched on a dime. I didn’t do anything about the sound. It was just my mind that made it work. Amazing feeling. Killer gig.
Would you choose a platinum record or one perfect, legendary live show?
Maybe a legendary live show. I don’t have an epic memory of any album, but I do remember Sepultura in Oslo ’91 or ’92. That was an epic show!
What’s your greatest fear?
Duh! How about War? Or my kids having an accident. Or running out of milk. That would be freaking scary!
When did you last cry, and why?
Last night. I ran out of milk.
What’s the trait you most deplore in yourself?
I tend to be a little besserwisser. My wife told me how to spell besserwisser. That’s a bit annoying.
What’s the trait you most deplore in other musicians?
In general? They are all individuals. How can I answer that?
Describe yourself in three words.
Introvert, brilliant, besserwisser.
What’s your guiltiest pleasure?
Wood! I love wood.
What does a great riff feel like to write?
I can’t stop playing that riff when it comes to me. Then I need to distance myself from that riff to figure out if it actually is as good as it felt. But it feels great!
What’s the worst thing a fan has ever said to you?
It’s not what they say. It’s how long they say it. Some people don’t understand when enough is enough.
What’s the worst thing a critic has ever said to you?
I don’t know. Everybody is entitled to their own opinion.
If you weren’t in music, what would you be doing?
Building guitars.
What’s one album outside your genre you secretly love?
Secretly? None. Maybe I’ll pick an artist instead of an album. Haley Reinhart. She is great.
What keeps you awake at night?
When people think they know me, and think they know how I think. But they don’t.
Riffs, royalties or recognition, if you had to choose?
I really don’t care about money or fame. So, Easy. Riffs. But I need money?
What’s the most important lesson the road has taught you?
Which way home is.
What happens when the music stops?
Hopefully I stop before the music. I’m pretty sure that’s what will happen.
