Devin Townsend has announced The Moth, his ambitious new orchestral Heavy Metal project more than a decade in the making. The 24-track album will be released on 29 May 2026 via InsideOutMusic, with first single Enter The City out now.
Townsend describes The Moth as a story about someone confronting old patterns of behaviour and moving towards self-acceptance. He says the record is “about the journey, but it is also about arrival”, with Enter The City appearing near the beginning of that arc.
Originally conceived as Townsend’s “life’s work”, The Moth took shape after an offer from the head of the North Netherlands Orchestra and Choir, prompting him to use those forces for an original work rather than revisiting earlier material.
The finished release spans three connected parts: the main album, The Moth – The Afterlife, and The Moth – The War, a live recording captured in the Netherlands in March 2025.
