Professional skater and Jackass star Bam Margera has shared a heartfelt tribute to his late friend Brent Hinds, the longtime guitarist and co-vocalist of Mastodon, who died in a motorcycle accident on August 20.
In a statement posted on social media, Margera reflected on his unlikely but enduring friendship with Hinds, which began over a decade ago on the Soundwave Festival circuit in Australia.
"I am devastated and still processing the tragic loss of one of my closest friends Brent Hinds. Around the time Ryan Dunn died, I met Brent on the Soundwave Festival in Australia and said to him in a joking way, 'You look and act like Ryan Dunn and we should just be best friends,' and he said 'ok' and just like that we were."
In addition to remembering their bond, Margera revealed that he and Hinds had recently been recording music together for his new band Amore Ad Lunam, with Margera stepping into the role of vocalist.
"Brent and I recently had been recording tracks on a new album with a new band I have been doing vocals with called @amoreadlunam… It has been a privilege and honor working with Brent. I cherish the time we spent together working on guitar tracks and vocals that we just very recently layed down together."
Margera added that his collaborators Stevaughn Decay and Eman have been compiling photos and video clips for a special memorial slideshow, one that humorously ends with a clip of Hinds accidentally breaking Margera's arm with a golf club.
Hinds died in a motorcycle accident in Atlanta on August 20. He was 51. According to Atlanta police, Hinds was riding a Harley-Davidson late Wednesday night when he collided with a BMW SUV at the intersection of Memorial Drive SE and Boulevard SE. He was found unresponsive at the scene and pronounced dead shortly after. The driver of the SUV remained and spoke with investigators.
