Canadian heavy metal icons Kittie are stirring excitement once again, this time teasing a 25th anniversary project for their groundbreaking 1999 debut album Spit. The record, which went gold in the United States, remains one of the most important nu-metal releases of its era — and it looks like 2025 will see it reimagined in a brand-new way.

On Saturday, August 16, Kittie shared a post featuring two photos: a throwback of frontwoman Morgan Lander alongside producer GGGarth Richardson (who helmed Spit and 2001's Oracle), and a present-day shot of the band with Richardson. The caption read: "1999 but make it 2025 #somethingiscoming #XXV #fullcircle"

The hashtags strongly suggest that Kittie are planning a 25th anniversary edition of Spit. Or maybe it's some kind of extensive remix and remaster, though I'm guessing it's the re-recording thing given the #fullcircle hashtag.

Released in 1999 when its members were still teenagers, Spit stood out as one of the only mainstream nu-metal albums fronted by women. Its blend of raw aggression, feminist undertones, and undeniable hooks made it a landmark release, earning gold certification and a permanent place in metal history.

Kittie's Reunion

Kittie's long‑awaited reunion began in early 2022, following years of hiatus caused by financial strains, waning public interest, and the tragic death of bassist Trish Doan in 2017. Renewed interest – fueled by a resurgence of nu‑metal's popularity and exposure on platforms like TikTok – led the band to reunite for performances at festivals like Blue Ridge Rock in September and When We Were Young in October 2022, with bassist Ivy Vujic rejoining the lineup.

Shortly after these performances, Kittie signed with Sumerian Records and began writing new material throughout 2023, ultimately recording their long‑anticipated seventh studio album, Fire, in November and December of that year with producer Nick Raskulinecz.

Released June 21, 2024, Fire marked Kittie's first full‑length album in nearly 13 years and quickly established itself as a powerful comeback. It garnered critical praise, landed on best‑of‑the‑year lists – such as Consequence and AllMusic – and earned a nomination for the 2025 Juno Award for Metal/Hard Music Album of the Year. Singles like "We Are Shadows" even became their highest‑charting track to date, reaching number 20 on Billboard's Mainstream Rock Airplay chart.
