Deftones began teasing something called "Private Music" last week during a UK show alongside the date of July 10. Now Deftones has seemingly confirmed that new music is coming this week thanks to a mysterious teaser that looks like screenshots of a new music video.
Also based on those two stills, it looks like touring bassist Fred Sablan is in the band permanently – or at least it part of this album cycle. Sablan replaced Sergio Vega, who left the band in 2022. Vega's groove-oriented bass playing helped shape the band’s post-Chi Cheng era, contributing significantly to four studio albums: Diamond Eyes in 2010, Koi No Yokan in 2012, Gore in 2016, and Ohms in 2020.
All we know so far is that the new record was produced by Nick Raskulinecz (Alice In Chains, Foo Fighters). Deftones guitarist Stephen Carpenter noted in a 2024 interview with B-Real's The Dr. Greenthumb show, it'll be a mix of Koi No Yokan and Ohms. Funny that Carpenter omits Deftones' 2016 album Gore, though I'm sure a lot of people are super stoked about that.
"I feel this one sounds like a continuation of Ohms and Koi, that's what I would say… I tell you what, I think when you hear it, like all of our records, you will hear our sound," said Carpenter. "You'll hear us. But I think you're going to hear things on this one that you never heard on any of them. So…"
Carpenter later commented on if vocalist Chino Moreno rapped on the record, remaining mysterious about the whole thing: "He's really good at flipping up what he does, like, he always changes what he does, [while] still doing what he does. It's actually pretty dope."
In the meantime, Deftones has the following dates lined up for 2025 thus far.
