Storm Corrosion — the enigmatic collaboration between Opeth frontman Mikael Åkerfeldt and Porcupine Tree mastermind Steven Wilson — released their one and only self-titled album back in 2012. The album also featured contributions from Wilson's Porcupine Tree bandmate Gavin Harrison, acclaimed woodwind player Ben Castle, and The London Session Orchestra.
Storm Corrosion quickly gained a cult following which isn't shocking given who's in the band. Despite its lasting impact, Storm Corrosion never released a follow-up, leaving fans clamoring for more for over a decade. Now, there’s new hope.
In a fresh interview with India’s Sinusoidal Music, Åkerfeldt revealed that while there are currently no concrete plans for a second Storm Corrosion album, the possibility of one happening is far from dead. He and Wilson are still in touch regularly — and yes, they've discussed returning to the project.
"No, it's not really going anywhere. I mean, other than when we talk — or text rather. Usually when we're texting, [Steven] usually sends me funny clips or something. So we're not necessarily talking about any collaborations or music or anything like that in terms of us doing something. But we have talked a lot over the years about doing another Storm Corrosion, especially, because we're both very happy with that record.
"But none of us, we don't really know what to do, because we are not the type of people who would want to repeat ourselves. Even if I think that album is great, and there's more to do with that sound, I think we wanna probably do something different. And I'm thinking maybe something that's even more hard, more special, eclectic. I think it's probably gonna happen at some point."
Åkerfeldt previously addressed a potential new Storm Corrosion record in a 2024 interview with Classic Rock, saying: "Me and Steve have been talking about that. I went to see Steven in London to talk and to drink [laughs]. There is a reissue of that album coming out, and Steven has done a new Atmos mix. So I pitched the idea of a possible next record from Storm Corrosion. He didn't really buy into my suggestion. That's a shame.
He continued: "Steve doesn't want to send music [over the internet]. He prefers us to make it together in the same room. But I'll bring it up again, and I'm sure we'll do something new. Should it happen, I would like us to do a requiem, something completely overblown."
