Steve Göldby and Jools Green. Vader - The Dome - November 2016

Jools Green says her fondest and most enduring memory of Steve Göldby was their collaboration on the Vader gig with Hate Eternal at The Dome, Tufnell Park in London on 14 November 2016, supported by Concrete Age and Threat Signal.

We had met at MetalTalk Christmas events, but this was the only gig we covered together, and the whole event was a big thing for me. It was the first time, as an out-of-towner, I had crossed London alone without the help of my London friends. I did get slightly lost on the way there but found some helpful people to set me in the right direction, and I managed to arrive on time. It was also my first time on a tour bus.

Steve Göldby was booked to interview Vader vocalist Piotr Wiwczarek, a bit of a hero of mine, so he invited me to sit in on the interview to get a few pointers and give me confidence for future potential face-to-face interviews. It was a fascinating learning curve. Steve was such a natural at developing conversation between them. I chipped in a little bit but felt very nervous.

After the interview, the rest of the job, photographing the bands and making notes for the live review, was much more in my comfort zone. This started off fine with the opening and support bands, but by the time Death/Thrash Titans Vader hit the stage, the pit was an absolute frenzy.

There was no photographer area behind a barrier, so Steve stood behind me gripping the stage and a monitor, holding back the pit so I could stand in front of him and safely take pictures.

The irony was that this actually resulted in what I consider to be possibly my best-ever photo as a MetalTalk photographer of Piotr, bearing in mind I’m not actually a photographer. I just used to take photos to back up my live work prior to having Keith Conlin do the dangerous work for me.

The event also put a new slant on the phrase ‘Work hard, play hard’. Steve could certainly hold his drink. I struggled to match him with my halves to his pints, thrust upon me because he insisted he owed me many pints for the work I had done for him over the previous four years, as it was then

I’m am now proud to say I’ve have reached the thirteen-year mark with MetalTalk.

So to cope with this flowing river of alcohol, because it would be rude to refuse or worse to be seen as a lightweight by your boss, every time he popped out to the smoking area for a cigarette break, I would sneak off for a cheeky water to try and dilute the alcohol and keep my head fairly clear.

It was a superb evening, and even when the lights went up and the crowd left, Steve was still there down by the stage, pint in hand, giving it large.

The Vader event and interview article link is here, for which Steve gave me full credit. What a gentleman!!
