Suffocation slams hard with their classic recipe for Death Metal at The Slay. Tonight, Glasgow becomes the next victim to face no-nonsense Death Metal from a well-respected band with a healthy arsenal of support acts in the shape of AngelMaker, Fuming Mouth, Carcosa and Mélancolia.

By far the oldest band here, Suffocation have the most experience in showing everyone how Death Metal is really done. They lack the diversity of the previous bands with a more straightforward Death Metal sound, but this is nothing bad as their sound is just as brutal and hellish.

Suffocation have by far the most experience, so it is not difficult for them to have already earned the respect of their listeners.
With a slight delay to the show due to technical difficulties, Suffocation finally arrived on stage to hit hard, and I mean hard, with straight-up, no-nonsense classic Death Metal.

There are a flurry of blast beats, mind-melting solos and grooves in their riffs that create an apocalyptic immersion of terror. Going straight from Thrones Of Blood, Seraphim Enslavement, and Effigy Of The Forgotten, there is a sense of sheer chaos as if it were a lesson from the grandfathers of Death Metal to show us how it is really done.

Ricky’s vocals and deep growls are fierce and demand total respect. All though the band has aged, they sound just as fresh as when they first began in the ’80s.
Their performance drives a sound that is heavier and more exciting compared to their records. If anything, it fully enhances their releases.
The mosh pits are just as insane as earlier, and there is little time for chit-chat between songs due to their limited time on the stage. We are treated to more tracks such as Catatonia, Perpetual Deception and finishing off with Infecting The Crypts.

Tonight’s show was nothing but a treat for all Death Metal fans, old school or new school. A night of blood, sweat, and tears leaves me knackered and overjoyed from the performances from all of tonight’s bands.
Some have claimed that Death Metal may be dying, but if going by tonight, this could not be further from the truth. This tour is still going strong with more UK acts, so make sure to check them out before their tour ends.

Mélancolia
Up first to start the show of slaughter is Mélancolia, a somewhat fresh band to hit the scene with their unique sound of Melodic Blackened Deathcore. Having travelled all the way from their origin in Australia, they are set to make their presence known regardless of where they go.

Their overall sound is immense yet unique. Plenty of subgenres can be heard, ranging from Nu metal, industrial goth, straight up to no-nonsense Metalcore. Regardless of the different styles, the point is the same throughout their set, which is to create a heavy, immersive wall of sound that leaves you wanting more and more from them.

This band may be young but they have already perfectly shaped their tone and gained respect from the crowd as if they have been around for a century already.
Their aggressive and fast-paced tones set a great example of what is to come for the rest of the night.

Carcosa
Next is an aggressive band known as Carcosa. A slightly more mature band from New York, they provide tonight with a unique yet similar blend of Death Metal Hardcore. This is now often seen as Slam Metal, and slam is the perfect word to use when it comes to their sound.

Each riff and beat hits hard as if you were consistently thrown face-first into the ground by a 10-ton truck. Rather than going for full-on sonic speed blast beats that Death Metal often refers to, Carcose focuses more on crushing and slower breakdowns with catchy grooves.

This does not lessen the impact, though, as their sound is just as heavy as the rest of the bands in this genre.
The vocals are low and brutal, using the similar ‘BREEE’ techniques often used with this blend of Metal. Carcosa slammed hard tonight with a sheer brutal force to be reckoned with.
Fuming Mouth
Next is Fuming Mouth, a slightly more well-known band from Massachusetts. They already have a fairly large arsenal of tracks to choose from for their set tonight.

Fuming Mouth is not just a name for the band but describes their sound perfectly. Mark’s vocals are intense and filled with 100% rage. He roars into the mic hard as he stares into the audience with a murderous glare.

Their sound is more straight forward compared to the previous bands, however, it is just as aggressive. The msuci bellows hard throughout the venue, encouraging mosh pit after mosh pit throughout each song.
There is a great sense of despair and primal rage in this set that shows us Death Metal is nothing to piss around with. Who knew seeing so much aggression on a stage could be so fun?

AngelMaker
For the final support, we have AngelMaker, and these guys are no strangers to being crowd fillers. When you see a band fill the stage with three guitarists and 2 vocalists, you know that their sound is going to be immense. They take no time to muck about with introductions as they kick straight into their first song, which continues the aggression for tonight.

The BREE is strong with these guys, especially with two vocalists. Taking turns to fill the venue with their low rumbling growls, it is even more intense when they scream into the mic at the same time.
These guys are no strangers to combining different styles of Metal with bone-crunching breakdowns, fast-paced blast beats, and groove Metal-style riffs.

Furious, diverse, and full-on violent extremity describes tonight’s performance perfectly. The sheer wall of sounds coming from three guitars mixed with intense blast beats forces a sound to be reckoned with and which defiantly deserves respect.

The breakdowns command the audience to open the pits and slam hard into each other. While security has been somewhat relaxed tonight, this was a point where there were more concerns for injury in the crowd due to the band’s harsh supersonic wall of brutal, hellish sounds.
