Roxy The Rock Dog: "Steve brought a lot of joy to this planet. He will be well received wherever he goes next."

I was fortunate to meet Steve Göldby on a flight from London City Airport to Dundee. I was heading home after work meetings in London, and he was heading off to see some friends. We had such a laugh, and it was lovely to talk all things Metal from the ’80s/’90s.

He gave me his business card and told me all about his intention to have a first-class Metal and news website. There was so little coverage of Metal in the noughties, it was sometimes almost like it had never happened.

After establishing that we both knew a lot about Metal, he invited me to become a columnist. Unfortunately,  at the time, I couldn’t, as my children were young, and I didn’t have enough time. Later, when they were older, I joined the review team.

We published interviews, album reviews and gig reviews for returning artist Dan Reed and new to the UK scene Jer Gregg, from Nashville. We developed a relationship with Deamonstealer AKA Sahil master of all things thrash Metal in Mumbai. We started covering bands in India,  Pakistan, Dubai and Syria, before the Arab Spring led to widespread disruption. We still don’t know what happened to so many MetalTalk friends from the area post-2012.

We did publish an interview on the war in Syria, which we were rightly proud of. Major news outlets were on the ground in Syria, but people were too frightened to talk to them. We published our story based on interviews with our Metal friends in the area, which explained why musicians and artists were amongst the first to be targeted and also that troops from Iran were present.

MetalTalk readers were the lucky recipients of these new grounds being broken. Musicians trusted Steve Göldby, and they were pleased to be published by MetalTalk. There’s so much talent in other countries and continents. Steve made friends with them all.

It wasn’t all music reviews. Steve wanted to build the Metal community up and bring Metalheads together. There was a fantastic team at MetalTalk and there was definitely a re-established community.

Steve Göldby was successful in his endeavours to set up a first-class Metal website, and the community he encouraged and developed around MetalTalk was amazing.

I’m so sorry he has passed. Steve brought a lot of joy to this planet. He will be well received wherever he goes next.

I am thinking of his partner and sister. He adored them, and the support he received from them was solid, kind, caring and loving. He was held in love to the end.

Claire, AKA Roxy The Rock Dog.
