Jason Slater was a pioneering force in Heavy Metal and alternative rock whose legacy will be immortalised in the upcoming authorised biography, For The Sake Of Supposing. The book, written by Slater’s close friend and confidant Brian J. Heaton, is set for release on 8 March 2025 exclusively on Amazon.
This book captures Slater’s journey from his formative years in East Palo Alto, California, to his monumental impact on music as a member of Third Eye Blind and founder of Snake River Conspiracy.
It also delves into his role as a producer and songwriter for iconic bands like Queensrÿche, particularly during the challenging production of Operation: Mindcrime II.
“Jason and I planned to write this book together once his career in music was over,” Heaton told us. “We talked about it all the time, saying that one day, we would tell all his stories and memories. After a lot of laughs and plenty of tears, that day is close at hand. I just wish Jason was here to revel in it. I miss him terribly.”
The biography offers a heartfelt exploration of Slater’s personal and professional highs and lows, featuring his own reflections alongside interviews with collaborators like Eric Valentine, Joe Baressi, and Craig Locicero of Forbidden, who penned the foreword. The book is described as a mix of biography, memoir, and stream of consciousness, enriched with vivid anecdotes and rare photos, capturing Slater’s wit, talent, and creative essence.
Jason Slater: For The Sake Of Supposing is part biography, part memoir, and part stream of consciousness from the man himself. To that end, there are long passages written by Jason detailing his encounters with Prince, Ozzy Osbourne, Tommy Lee, Green Day, Don Dokken, George Lynch, Geoff Tate, and more.
“Jason was often misunderstood by the people he worked with,” Heaton said. “They would see this charismatic goofball who cracked jokes and seemingly wasted time in the studio. In reality, Jason was always listening and observing.
“He preferred to work alone and late at night when his creativity would really flourish. This account of Jason’s life illustrates just how talented he was and how his loyalty and self-consciousness were exploited by some of the people he thought cared about him.”
Slater died from liver failure in Maui, Hawaii, on 9 December 2020. He was 49 years old.
