Soulfly debuted in 1998 with their incredibly nü-metal self-titled album and, after a few records, eventually turned into more of a groove metal band with some death metal twists. Now all these years later and Soulfly mastermind Max Cavalera wants to get back to the tribal… and maybe nü?

"[The next Soulfly record will be] very tribal, back to basics. I'm gonna let Soulfly be Soulfly again," said Cavalera in an interview with Metal-Roos. "I kind of stopped Soulfly from being Soulfly for a couple of years, and I kind of regret that a little bit. But now that I have Cavalera and Go Ahead And Die and Killer Be Killed, I get to really let Soulfly be Soulfly. Let's go back to what it was in the beginning. It's that tribal groove power that people love. So I'm creating a record with that."

Cavalera previously expressed interest in going back to his nü-metal days in an interview with Moshpit Passion, saying: "I really liked the early Soulfly stuff because it was more tribal and more groove. And now because I have Cavalera and Go Ahead And Die, I can be as heavy as I want with Cavalera that it leaves me Soulfly to be something quite different. I can mold Soulfly a bit different now where Soulfly is really kind of like more of a groove-oriented tribal band. And I think that's really, in a lot of people's perception, that was the best of Soulfly was like that.

"So, it's not that I'm jumping on the bandwagon of nu metal; it's not really that. It's just that I think that the early Soulfly had some kind of magic that, through the years we kind of lost that magic. And I think we're trying to bring it back with this new record that is gonna come out next year."
