James Hetfield recently joined Touch Tunes for National Jukebox Day Artist Spotlight, discussing Metallica’s 2023 track ‘If Darkness Had a Son’ from their latest album ‘72 Seasons.’
The singer explained, “‘If darkness had a son, here I am.’ That lyric was in my phone for a long time and [I] just had to apply it to a song, and it really fits this song really well.”
“Lars is playing a great groove, and the riff is, like, syncopating with it really well,” he added, “Looking forward to this being a live song with a big crowd screaming ‘Temptation!’”
Released as the third single from ‘72 Seasons,’ ‘If Darkness Had a Son’ topped Billboard’s U.S. Hot Trending Songs chart. The full album achieved significant success, going Gold in France and Germany, Platinum in Poland, and reaching Number 1 on various charts. It also landed at Number 2 on the U.S. Billboard 200.
Following its release, Metallica embarked on a world tour, wrapping up the 2024 leg in Mexico City on September 29. Soon after, they announced 2025 tour dates for North America and Australia.
The next leg will kick off in Las Vegas on April 12, 2025. Later that year, Metallica will tour Australia, with performances in Perth, Adelaide, Melbourne, Brisbane, and Sydney, before concluding in Auckland, New Zealand, on November 19.
