The Acoustic Sessions Shed A New Light On Thin Lizzy

Thin Lizzy announced their first new album since 1983’s Thunder and Lighting. The Acoustic Sessions will be released on 24 January and features previously unheard vocals from Phil Lynott, who passed away in 1986. The ten-track listing came together with the full backing of the Thin Lizzy family and is a nostalgic throwback to a well-loved time in music.

The record is a compilation of material from Thin Lizzy’s first three albums, with fan favourites such as Whisky In The Jar showcasing the iconic band in a new light. Founding member Eric Bell recorded new guitar parts for each song atop the original drum takes of Brian Downey. Producer and mixer Richard Whittaker worked to bring to life this unique take on a handful of the bands’ discography highlights.

A play-through of the album was featured at an event dedicated to the release. With some striking visuals to accompany the music on a cinema screen, we got to revel in the stripped-down music of Thin Lizzy. Captivatingly brilliant, Lynott’s voice brought an emotional response from the audience as the raw quality of his words took hold. His legacy has never faltered, and now, The Acoustic Sessions will give both old fans and new the chance to become reacquainted with the Irish icon.

Each song has been produced with the utmost respect, with Lynott’s vocals just the tip of this masterpiece of an iceberg. A special moment comes with the song Eire, as words of Lynott’s home ring out with an arresting sentiment. Though the album mixes new tracking and that of decades ago, the combination has been flawlessly blended and really sheds light on a different side of Thin Lizzy.

A selection of the team who oversaw the project was there to discuss how it all came to fruition. From Bell taking just two days to record his fresh guitar parts to the artist behind the brilliant artwork having to do forty-seven different versions of Lynott’s Eyes on the album cover to get it right, there was nothing but praise and commiseration for their achievement.
