Salem UK Drop Anthemic Single Meteorite Ahead Of New Album Outer Limits

With their new album Outer Limits, set for release on 29 November 2024 via Rude Awakening Records, Salem UK have released their second single, Meteorite. This new single is inspired by Hull Fair, Europe’s largest travelling fair dating back to 1279.

Though Salem UK are a band that have their roots in 1979 and the New Wave Of British Heavy Metal, Meteorite finds that classic Salem UK soaring sound, especially during the twin guitar attack of the middle section.

“Initially, I thought the heavy main riff meant we were going to write a Heavy Metal tune,” bassist Adrian Jenkinson told us, “but it turned into more of a rock anthem. The second half really pushes along. The song is named after a fair ride, and the lyrics are about people’s interpretation of the lights and stars they see in the sky. It might be a saviour, or it might be a bomb.”

“When I was introduced to the verse riff, it gave me a kind of Run To The Hills vibe,” guitarist Jonny Hirons said, “while the intro riff had an early Metallica Motorbreath feel.”

“There’s a Rolling Stones vibe going on at the beginning,” Simon Saxby said, smiling, “which is surprising for us because we have never married supermodels or taken any illegal substances.”

Meteorite follows on the back of the first single, Rock You, which, following Prologue: The Fairground on new album Outer Limits, announces the beginning of the concept album, which explores the excitement of carnival rides. The film for Rock You was shot at Lord Line, Hull and O’Rileys, Hull.

“I never thought I would be involved in a concept album,” Adrian Jenkinson, who was also involved with production, told us. “The recording process was a lot of fun. Simon and I had a couple of attacks of the giggles and I think this joyful aspect comes through in some of the tracks.

“Jonny and Dan made the recording process easy, which meant we were free to focus on creativity. I hope you like the result.”

Simon Saxby describes the process as “probably the best recording sessions we’ve done, certainly the most relaxed we’ve been in the creative process. The biggest and best surprises usually came in the form of Adrian’s cooking skills. I would gladly walk to Hull for one of his curries. All in all, though, it was a good experience getting back in the studio. I can’t wait to do it again.”

Guitarist Jonny Hirons agrees. “Out of the many recording experiences I have had so far it was one of the more relaxed and experimental times,” he said, “trying out sounds, amps, pedals, guitars and pickups. In the past I used no more than three guitars for a full session, where this time I used up to six with a mix of active and passive pickups along with a mix of solid state and valve amps.

“The creative process was interesting. Ady and I were able to come up with new ideas that came from existing ones rather than recreating a demo verbatim. Overall it was a fun experience, and I look forward to making the next album.”

“The recording process seemed to go well,” drummer Dan Ellis said, “and were able to add our own take and opinions on the way we thought the songs should go. Obviously, we all have our own ideas, and each of us brought something unique to the table, sometimes taking a song in a different direction. No idea we gave was a bad idea, just a different one.

“This is my first album cycle with Salem UK, and it went very smoothly.”
