Tender Vendetta

Recently released is Redux, the most extensive collection yet from aspiring Black Country quartet Tender Vendetta. Formed in 2020, they comprise vocalist Matty Nicholls, Aid Hall on guitar, his sibling Jord on bass and newest recruit, Ant, on the drum stool.

Combining the edge of early Guns N’ Roses, the grit of grunge with the energy and attitude of Punk, they produce a raw, effervescent sound that is instantly attention-grabbing and appealing.

Following a brief hiatus, they re-emerged with the addition of Ant in late 2023, subsequently returning to the studio in April 2024 to record two new tracks.

Lyrically, Redux is a no-holds-barred raw commentary on the vicious cycle of addiction, self-destruction, the internal battle with identity and the need to break free.  While the lyrics encompass dark themes, the vivacity of the music maintains a sense of optimism.

“You gamble with ammunition, keep rollin’ with the dice.
Playin’ Russian Roulette, playin’ with your life.”

The titular track, launches proceedings and is a brisk commentary on the rapid, ongoing descent of a habitual user.

A crisp, pummelling beat, underscored with a fleeting flashback to You Could Be Mine, are what strike you first before that rising razorlike guitar evolves into a grinding riff that ignites their characteristically rugged swagger and groove.

One wonders at what real-life observations inspired such acerbic lyrics, which are conveyed so vehemently by Matty.

Hot on its heels comes the strutting Kamikaze Love the second of the newly recorded numbers.

Capturing their live vivacity from the outset, the attack and swagger of GNR dominates the sound while the melody and relentless riffery grasps and propels you along.  Most notable is Aid’s melodically constructed solo, which paradoxically seems out of place but fits perfectly.

There is just so much going on in this, and it is illustrative of their growing confidence and acumen.

“How many times is the last time?
Heard your advice, much prefer the sound of mine.
Kamikaze Love, I’ll always crash ‘n’  burn.
I pull myself from the wreckage, yeah I guess I’ll never learn.”

“Just a bag of bones with an itchy nose.
Fast still feels slow, can’t tell if I’m still stoned.”

Riff Of The Record has to go to I’ll Do Me.  Imagine Alice In Chains on an errant treadmill. What an utterly delicious groove – simply irresistible.

“You do you, and baby, I’ll do me, yeah.”

“Ain’t it funny how quick friends turn favours into debts?”

The final cut is Pretty Dangerous, which is the second of the ‘older’ numbers. While one can detect a slightly leaner production, that same fundamental rhythmic intensity is alive and present.

I love the way the solo transforms from a gonzo sleaze rocker into a moody blues-tinged piece, which subsequently gathers momentum and intensity as it gallops towards the climax.

Weighing at a tad under 17 minutes, this is a most enjoyable release, short enough to be frequently repeated, absorbed and fully appreciated.

It is highly encouraging that it showcases their sumptuous groove, one which they undoubtedly fully intend to stick to. You can find our more about Tender Vendetta at Spotify or, alternatively, follow this link.
