In a recent Paramore concert, Hayley Williams paid tribute to Freddie Mercury by recreating his performance at Wembley.
Paramore kicked off Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour on Saturday. Before their last song, ‘This Is Why,’ Hayley wanted to do something. “I’ve always wanted to try this,” she said before singing loudly. “Ay-oh.”
The crowd matched her high note. Mercury wowed Wembley Stadium during Live Aid in 1985. The crowd and Williams bounced the held notes of ‘ay-yo’ back and forth.
In a June interview with Nylon, Williams said she prefers simple stage outfits. When asked what makes a great stage outfit besides comfort, she used Mercury as an example, saying, “I kind of just love simple concepts with stage looks. Like, just let me get out there and get to work — I have sh*t to do! And I am quite partial to a masc moment right now… a la Freddie Mercury’s look for Queen’s set at Live Aid.”
“I’ve always loved Rodarte. When they do something that feels feminine, it feels playful, and there’s a uniqueness to it—it doesn’t take itself too seriously,” the singer previously told Vogue about her touring style. “That’s kind of where I’m at in my life: I’m having a lot of fun exploring and experimenting. I’m so excited to be in this era of my life where I’m really happier to embrace fashion. It’s so much more fun here.”
Hayley added, “1960s Alfred Hitchcock-meets-Stanley Kubrick. I like a lot of leg. I’m a very short person, so trying to get my Tina Turner on every night, I need the hemline to be at my hip bones. I’ve also found that I feel happier when I’m wearing color. I don’t love wearing black as much as I thought.”
Paramore has one more show left opening for Taylor Swift in London, after touring with her across Europe since May. Swift’s tour will continue in North America in October.
