Christian Münzner has now played in Obscura twice – the first time between 2008 and 2014, and then again between 2020 and 2024. Münzner recently issued a lengthy statement on his social media partially regarding his second departure, noting that it was simply due to creative differences.
Obscura was in the studio earlier this year working on a new album, though it's not clear who's even in the band anymore. As of right now, Metal-Archives lists both bassists Ype Terwisscha van Scheltinga (Vltimas, ex-Dodecahedron) and Robin Zielhorst (ex-Exivious, ex-Cynic), guitarist Kevin Olasz, and drummer James Stewart (Bloodshot Dawn, Decapitated) as live members. Obscura has not issued any statements on the matter.
"I have been a bit silent on social media, but since I have received so many messages, it is time for an update:" wrote Münzner.
"1. First things first, yes it is true, I left Obscura shortly after the last European run. I do not want to get into the nitty gritty of things, I know it is a cliche to say so, but the reason were just creative differences when it came to the next album. I am still super proud of the album that was A Valediction and enjoyed all the tours that followed and it was great to meet so many of you in person. It was a good run, but now the time has come for me to move on.
"2. I am very excited to announce that I finished the songwriting for the debut album of my new band/project VOID SECTOR ZERO and will be moving on to pre-production shortly. The music will be tech/prog thrash in the tradition of bands like DEATHROW, CORONER, OBLIVEON, WATCHTOWER,TOXIK etc. mixed with some 90s tech death influences (DEATH, CYNIC, ATHEIST, NOCTURNUS, MARTYR…), jazz/fusion elements (ALLAN HOLDSWORTH, TRIBAL TECH) and tons of guitar solos inspired by everyone who was on the Shrapnel label between 1985 and 1999. I will announce the line up once it is finalized.
"3. The pre-production for ETERNITYS END 4 is almost done. Soon I will get in touch with the rest of the guys and we can move on to the final recordings. Expect our fastest and thrashiest album so far.
"4. The RETROMORPHOSIS album is finished, but because of the label being what labels are today it will most likely be a 2025 release.
"5. I have a VERY EXCITING video course coming out at the end of that month, so keep your eyes open. More on that later."
