In the often exciting, surprising, and even baffling world of trends in Heavy Metal, riff-driven, Melodic Metal is enjoying a real renaissance moment right now.
With the kings of the genre like Dream Theater poised to play arena shows in the UK and legends like Helloween still putting out superb new material after more than 40 years, it feels only right that there should be some space for younger voices and bands to rise up through the ranks.
Such a list of exciting young Metal bands should surely include London Melodic Metal band Voltstorm. Voltstorm cites legendary Prog Metal pioneers Queensrÿche as a major influence, and it’s not hard to see why.
From the melody in the chorus to the breakdown, it’s clear to see the band look up to the legendary Washington Metal titans in terms of composition and theme. But Voltstorm have obviously done their homework and you can hear the influence of other Metal greats like Fates Warning and even Chemical Wedding era Bruce Dickinson.
It’s a rather exciting mix, and they put it all on display with their brand-new single Wake Me Up.
In the band’s own words, the lyrical inspiration behind Wake Me Up is a call to awareness in trying times. “Wake Me Up is about trying to regain control of life and develop awareness towards those around us,” they told MetalTalk, “even when we feel we can only fight for our own survival.
“It’s an uplifting song that pushes listeners to switch on their minds and look at the world with new eyes.”
With a full album, Break The Silence, on its way, one can only hope that Voltstorm keep on fighting the good fight and releasing new music to challenge and excite their growing number of listeners.
This is certainly a band to watch.
