There was a wave of noticeable excitement at MetalTalk Towers when we blasted out Hurricane, the second single from UK rock quintet Black Lakes. This is a stunning song and one that firmly cements the band as ones to watch in 2024. The song is taken from their second album Dead Gods, which is due for release later this year.

“They’re a great band,” MetalTalk Photographer Jason Samuels said. “Slowly getting bigger and deserving of it.” Paul Monkhouse was equally effusive in his praise. “They’ve been around quite a while,” he said, “but this shows they’re real contenders. Loving it.”

“Hurricane is a political commentary on the hopeful aspirations and expectations placed on world leaders by those desperate for salvation from a societal set that will never provide it,” the band said. “The hurricane comes and repeatedly and relentlessly washes away each and every expectation whilst we, the people, are left begging for salvation.”

Black Lakes recently released The Dark EP, which features the new single Hurricane, the previous single White Cliffs and an unreleased demo of Maze from the Dead Gods recording sessions.

“White Cliffs is dedicated to all those who have lost their lives in search of a better one,” Black Lakes said. “We deplore the abhorrent way in which the UK government cares more about stopping small boats than saving the lives of those within them.”

Black Lakes’ sound blurs the boundaries between hard rock and Alternative Metal, drawing on a wide range of influences from across both genres.

Formed in 2018, Black Lakes successfully crowdfunded the production and release of their 2022 critically acclaimed debut album For All We’ve Left Behind. Produced by Romesh Dodangoda, the album achieved several notable accolades, including Album Of The Year by four different media outlets.

Following the success of their crowdfunding campaign for their debut album, Black Lakes ran a pre-order campaign via their website to fund their upcoming second album, Dead Gods.

The band have sold over 200 copies of the upcoming album to date, raising over £6000 to help fund the production of the record.

You can catch the band live tomorrow night at Cardiff Fuel with Jordan Red. “Cardiff band…going places,” MetalTalk Writer and Photographer Paul Hutchings said. “Great live band. Supported Florence Black at Tramshed.”

If you are in Cardiff tomorrow, you are in for a treat. Jordan Red are awesome live as well.
