TENACIOUS D Has A Covers Album You'll Probably Never Hear

Tenacious D has been on a roll with releasing short cover songs in the past year. The duo have thus far tackled "Wicked Game" by Chris Isaak, "…Baby One More Time" by Britney Spears for Kung Fu Panda 4, and "You're The First, The Last, My Everything" by Barry White for The Casagrandes Movie. So what're the chances we ever get a full Tenacious D covers album? Not likely.

According to Tenacious D's Kyle Gass in an interview with Loudwire Nights, Tenacious D actually recorded a full album's worth of covers that they eventually gave up on thanks to rights issues.

"If you do too many covers, then all of a sudden you're a bar band," Gass explained. "[But] I was really pushing for a covers project and we started going crazy because we have so many ready. We went into the studio and just knocked off, no exaggeration, 30, but kind of short versions just to see how we liked them."

Gass added: "We had some trouble getting the rights to one or two and then we got frustrated and said the hell with it. We'll just do our own thing."

The good news is that it sounds like a new Tenacious D record is on the way, which will be the band's first since Post-Apocalypto in 2018.

"We have to finish the new record," said Gass. "We've been working on it, we have a very strict six-year cycle."

He added: "[It's a] classic six-year cycle. I think we might be a little overdue … We gotta do it this year. We can feel the heat, but you know, it's gotta percolate. We got to fit in between Jack [Black's] very busy film schedule. But we're going to do it. We're going to get it. Publish or perish."

Tenacious D has been plotting a sequel to their 2006 movie The Pick Of Destiny for quite some time now, and in a 2023 interview with SirusXM, the band noted that it could still happen. "Yup. Both [a sequel to The Pick Of Destiny and School Of Rock]. Breaking news. We're thinking about doing both of those," said Black. Gass then joked "it's a hybrid – a school of D."
