Offering stunning vocals that ignite the soul, an addictive blues guitar riff, and a thrilling music video to match, the latest single from Beaux Gris Gris And The Apocalypse, Satisfy Your Queen, is both captivating and exhilarating and is sure to leave the listener craving more. The new single comes alongside the announcement of the band’s third studio album, Hot Nostalgia Radio, which will be released later this year.
“We’ve had over four years to write this album,” frontwoman and songwriter Greta Valenti told us. “The last album was recorded in 2019, pre-pandemic, and then we had to sit on it for two years. I had over 100 song ideas waiting to go, but I really wanted this album to represent classic, simple songwriting that strikes a chord within your soul.
“Every song should be a banger in some way, and these songs are really an evolution of who I am and who we are as a band. They’re not complicated on the surface, but I hope these songs make you feel and are added to the soundtrack of your life – fitting seamlessly with the songs you already know and love.”
Satisfy Your Queen begins with an energetic guitar riff, instantly setting the tone for the rest of the song. Powerful but somewhat sensual vocals from the band’s lead singer, Greta Valenti, take us through to the chorus, where we get a total change in texture.
With just vocals and percussion, the track highlights the title lyrics of Satisfy Your Queen, a hook that is instantly loveable and utterly addictive. Sprinkles of country and blues, organs, and tambourine play throughout the song, adding to the intense and feisty feel of the track.
With the band’s musicians hailing from both sides of the Atlantic, the mix of US and UK influences is obvious, creating a unique and powerful blend of Americana blues and electrifying rock.
“Even though the songs may veer from rock to blues to soul to Americana-country to singer-songwriter, they are still essentially three to four-minute pop songs,” Greta says. “Our fans aren’t genre-specific, and neither are we. They just like good songs and wanna have a good time. And so do we.”
Valenti takes centre stage in this music video, giving us an intense and dynamic performance that lures the viewer in the most bewitching way. The gothic imagery from the video, such as vampires, coffins and red roses, is somewhat new to the band, and it feels like they are pushing this symbolism further than they have before.
“I think our approach harkens back to when bands like the Beatles would write a bunch of different style songs,” guitarist Robin Davey says. “Be it country, or psychedelic, or whatever they did, they would always sound like the Beatles. We certainly don’t sound like the Beatles, but I hope that no matter what we do, we are still easily identifiable as Beaux Gris Gris”.
This uncharted territory feels right. It is confident, bold and assertive and I for one hope that there is more of this to come from Beaux Gris Gris & The Apocalypse.
