Let’s gear up for a nostalgia trip because legendary Northern Irish rockers Therapy? are hitting the road to celebrate the 30th anniversary of their groundbreaking album, Troublegum. The tour, aptly named "Troublegum 30," will probably turn into a journey back to the era when grunge and alternative rock ruled the airwaves. Please enable Javascript to view this content
Released in 1994, Troublegum was a cultural phenomenon. It stormed the charts, selling over a million copies worldwide and spawning hit singles like "Nowhere to Run" and "Teethgrinder." It earned critical acclaim, even landing nominations for prestigious awards like the Mercury Music Prize. It was also voted Album Of The Year in Kerrang! and Raw magazines, and only lost the top spot in Metal Hammer's Albums of 1994 list to Soundgarden's Superunknown.
"As a band, we were not expecting the impact that Troublegum would make. We knew we had worked very hard at our craft, every album gained more attention and we had steadily made more friends but even the earlier release and chart success of Screamager (a nod to both our Irish Punk godfathers and current ‘alternative and noise rock’ favorites) couldn’t prepare us for just how much our lives were about to change.” frontman Andy Cairns admits to Louder.
"The album seemed to click with people all over the globe and what had begun as three young, ordinary men from the North of Ireland wanting to make the kind of music they would like to hear themselves became something that seemed to take on a life of its own as it found its way out into the world," Cairns adds.
Now, three decades later, Therapy? feels it's time to revisit this defining moment in their career and celebrate it with the fans who made it all possible.
"Thirty years is a very long time and a lot has happened in those three decades, but now after recent new album release/touring cycles it feels right to take a beat and consider our legacy and the huge part our fan base helped in building it,” Cairns explains. “We’re often told that Troublegum changed people's lives: well, it changed ours too, so let’s get together in a glorious volume, noise, and melody and celebrate this album that we wrote for you, and you, in return, made a success."
The tour kicks off in September, taking Therapy? across multiple countries, including Australia, Europe, and the UK. The setlist for the tour will feature Troublegum played in its entirety, plus a host of other musical treats from around the same era of Therapy?'s recording career.
