After making a name for himself with his spiked black hair and energetic stage shows, Wayne Wells got the name Static and entered the nu-metal scene with his band Static-X in the ’90s, reaching number one on the Top Heatseekers with ‘Wisconsin Death Trip.’ But things went south for both the singer and his band as they rose to fame.
Wayne Static’s Sudden Death
On November 1, 2014, Wayne Static died at his home in Landers, California, just three days before his 49th birthday. Reports revealed that after taking oxycodone and alcohol that morning, he went to bed next to his wife, Tera Wray, who discovered his dead body later in the day.
Initial statements by his publicist claimed that Static hadn’t done hard drugs since 2009 and didn’t pass away due to ‘drug-related causes.’ But autopsy reports confirmed that his death resulted from a combination of prescription drugs: oxycodone, hydromorphone, alprazolam [Xanax], and alcohol.
Further details from the autopsy suggested the late singer occasionally used medicines prescribed to his wife, which Static-X manager Eric Dinkelmann mentioned on social media while explaining how Static’s addiction problems started around the same time as his relationship with Wray.
According to Dinkelmann and some other band insiders, while the vocalist didn’t have drug-related issues during the ‘heyday of Static-X,’ he started using them after meeting his adult film actress wife on Ozzfest in 2007, and this affected the band dynamics in the following years, triggering a hiatus in 2009.
What Happened To The Band After Static’s Death?
After 2008’s ‘Cult Of Static’ tour, Static-X members announced they were taking a break from the band for different reasons. As Koichi Fukuda said that he wanted some time with his family, Nick Oshiro cited the effect of Static’s addiction on his own sobriety.
So, Static focused on his side project, Pighammer, and started his solo career, releasing the ‘Pighammer’ album in 2011. Later, as his bandmates pursued separate projects, he attempted to reunite the band. But the other members refused the offer, leading the singer to announce the official end of Static-X in 2013. The band remained inactive until four years after Static’s death.
In 2018, the surviving original members revealed plans to reunite Static-X for a new album, ‘Project Regeneration,’ and include their late bandmate’s vocals in it, along with guest appearances from the likes of David Draiman and Ivan Moody. They also announced that a singer called Xer0 would fill in for the late frontman in the upcoming shows and records.
Tony Campos and Ken Jay refused to expose the new vocalist’s identity by making him wear a mask that looked like a zombie Wayne Static and keeping his real name a secret.
Now, Static-X is getting ready for a tour with the unnamed singer, starting with a performance in North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, on February 1, 2024.
