The changing of the guard in metal is slowly but surely happening. As bands like Metallica and Iron Maiden wind down their careers and retire, other bands need to start stepping up and filling those festival headlining slots. The recent surge of nü-metal nostalgia has propelled a handful of band from that era to a new level of popularity, though Papa Roach frontman Jacoby Shaddix list might be a little… off?

In an interview with Lazer 103.3, Shaddix said he feels "Korn, Papa Roach [and] Deftones" are the next Metallicas of the world. Which I guess begs the question of who the big four of nü-metal are, and if they could actually achieve Metallica status.

"We're watching Metallica step into that Rolling Stones spot right now. And Foo Fighters are another one of those groups. And Korn, Papa Roach [and] Deftones, we're like the next Metallicas. You know what I mean? That's it. We're stepping into that spot now. It just comes to, I guess, being able to survive the treachery of this rock and roll life. And if you can do that and still continue to create good art and good music, then we can get into that space."

Papa Roach has had a really interesting career. Of course they're known mostly as the band that did "Last Resort", but they've been doing a great job themselves in the limelight over the past few years. Papa Roach is hitting the road with Shinedown and Spiritbox later this year, which is great that they're keeping up with who's popular nowadays, but their record sales and overall popularity isn't exactly on the level of Korn and Deftones, either.

On the contrary, two of nü-metal's biggest acts – Linkin Park and System Of A Down – are either completely defunct or largely defunct. So someone's gotta step in and represent the genre, right?
