Looking for something new to listen to? Get acquainted with these tracks from some lesser-known bands released in May 2023 thanks to our monthly Underground Roundup! Check out our playlists below featuring this month's picks (as long as they're on streaming services), and you can listen to all previous editions of the Underground Roundup here.

An Autumn For Crippled Children – "Where Pain Begins"

An Autumn For Crippled Children will release their new record Closure on August 4, and they're here to begin the darkening of your day with "Where Pain Begins".

Blackbraid – "Moss Covered Bones On The Altar Of The Moon"

Blackbraid, the one-person project of Sgah'gahsowáh, is absolutely one of the next biggest things in black metal. Stay tuned for Blackbraid II due out July 7.

Bloodletter – "Blood Is Life"

Bloodletter is finally getting the attention they deserve after a decade, having signed to Wise Blood Records and releasing A Different Kind of Hell on July 21.

Doomcreeper – "Deprivation"

From the depths of Long Island comes Doomcreeper and their debut album Cryptic Death out now. Warm up your necks now, because the windmilling shall be fierce.

East Of The Wall – "Hegemony's Dilemma"

East Of The Wall is back with a brand new record A Neutral Second on June 30 and a perfectly proggy/sludgy new single "Hegemony's Dilemma" to whet your appetite.

End Reign – "Desolate Fog"

Headed up by Domenic Romeo (Integrity, A389 Recordings, etc.), End Reign snags members of Pig Destroyer, Full Of Hell, and more for their debut album out July 14.

Grotesqueries – "Corsepjuice"

Grotesqueries will release Vile Crematory on June 30 and I guarantee you whatever you think this sounds like based on everything you know, you're right. It's gross.

Gutslit – "Matriarch"

Speaking of "bands that explain themselves right up front," here's Gutslit! Purveyors of all things brutal from India, Gutslit will release Carnal on July 7.

Inferi – "Eyes Of Boundless Black"

What better way to introduce guitarist Sanjay Kumar (Equipoise, Wormhole) as Inferi's new shred overlord than with a crushing new standalong single?

Inhuman Nature – "Take Them By Force"

Inhuman Nature and Ninth Realm will drop their new split on August 31, but you can start the brutality early with the former's single "Take Them By Force".

Morkera – "Blind Obedience"

Croatian band Morkera has a penchant for horrifying album covers that absolutely nails how their music sounds. Aggravations is out now and yeah, it sounds like that.

Nixil – "Collapsing The Poles"

Nixil will release their Prosthetic Records debut From the Wound Spilled Forth Fire on August 25, and you can check out the blackened first single from it below.

Non Est Deus – "Thousand Years Of Sand"

German black metal band Non Est Deus is here with their fourth record in five years, and it's just as evil and pummeling as ever. Legacy is out now.

Outer Heaven – "Rotting Stone/D.M.T."

Outer Heaven will release Infinite Psychic Depths on July 21 and it'll feature guest spots from Pig Destroyer, Morbid Angel, and Undeath's vocalists. Give it to us now.

Remission – "Castor"

Australian death/thrash metal unit Remission hasn't announced a new record just yet, but "Castor" is really making us hope they do as soon as possible.

Psycho-Frame – "Internal Death Trance"

If you're in the mood for old-school deathcore with modern production, you're in luck! Psycho-Frame is devastating and their EP Remote God Seeker is out now.

Slugg – "Bloodbound"

Italian doom unit Slugg just released their debut record Orichalcum. It's four songs, 43 minutes, and steamroller-styled riffs forever.

Snorlax – "Book Ov Serpents"

To the best of my knowledge, this isn't about Pokémon in any way. It's just solid blackened death metal, and is by Snorlax. The Necrotrophic Abyss is out June 23.

Usnea – "Bathed In Light"

Usnea is back for the first time in six years with a miserable new single "Bathed In Light" and a equally depressing new album of the same name out now.

Victory Over The Sun – "Madeline Becoming Judy"

If you're not paying attention to what Vivian Tylinska is doing, you're fucking up. Victory Over The Sun is brilliant, and you need Dance You Monster To My Soft Song!.

Wounds Of Recollection – "You Were Never Loved"

"You Were Never Loved" is part of an EP where 100% of the funds raised will go directly to The Trevor Project. It's a great cause and this is great music.

Wyntyr Myst – "Frostbitten Ophidian Veins"

It ain't winter, but it might as well be when you hit play on this new Wynter Mist tracks. Wynter Mist's new EP Bitter Hymns is out now.
