Metal experimentalists The Mars Volta have announced another leg of tour dates in support of their recent self-titled, seventh LP. Long-time TMV pal Teri Gender Bender (Le Butcherettes) will be joining the band for the trek through the South and Southwest.

The Mars Volta will be guests of the Red Hot Chili Peppers along with Thundercat on May 12 in San Diego at the Snapdragon Stadium (and again in June in Europe with additional guest Iggy Pop in support instead of Thundercat). The band will also be playing the Primavera Sound festival in Spain on June 9.

The Mars Volta broke up in January 2013 when Cedric Bixler-Zavala, one half of the band's leading duo alongside Omar Rodríguez-López, revealed he had quit the band. The Mars Volta then reunited last year to release The Mars Volta, which reflected a distinct change in style.

About the change in sound, Bixler-Zavala said "Some people might see it as betrayal. I've seen some people call it yacht rock. But yacht rock slaps so hard that hip-hop producers sample it all the time."
