The members of Soulfly were honored by Albuquerque, New Mexico mayor Tim Keller with the key to the city, shortly before Soulfly’s gig on January 28 at the city’s premier venue, the Launchpad.
Earlier in the day, Soulfly posted this photo to Instagram with the caption, "ALBUQUERQUE TONIGHT! MAYOR JUST GAVE US THE KEY 2 THE CITY"
Keller took over as mayor of New Mexico's largest city in December 2017, and his love of metal is no secret. He told told the Albuquerque Journal that his favorite heavy metal group is Sepultura, saying "They are awesome," and described their sound as "the music of empowerment." That same year, he told the New York Times, "Albuquerque has always been pretty strong on the heavy metal front… What can I say, this is something I've been into for a long time."
And Keller flies his freak flag front and center. In December of 2018, he wore a Pantera Christmas sweater to a bill signing that finally gave the employees of the city of Albuquerque paid family and parental leave, making it the first city in New Mexico to do so.
Keller was born and raised in Albuquerque, and often hits up shows in the city. He has been known to introduce bands, too, including Anthrax and Trivium, before they hit the stage in Albuquerque. The same was true the other night, when Keller introduced Soulfly at the Launchpad, and this great fan shot video of the evening’s highlights can be seen below.
Meanwhile, Soulfly will continue to tear up cities across the US on a massive tour. You can check out all confirmed dates below.
