Here is an excerpt from the chat, as Halford talks about when he first saw himself losing his hair.
BraveWords: One of my treasured mentors in my hockey circles always told me this old proverb: “The good Lord made very few perfect heads and the rest he put hair on.” (We laugh). Hair and the fact that you started losing your hair was a crucial turning point in your life and the look of Judas Priest.
Halford: “Losing my hair was a big deal. It was a big deal for the longest time you know and in heavy metal especially. Having that big long haired vibe was part of the formal way that we presented ourselves. The long hair, the battle vest, jeans, sneakers, the bulletbelts, the wristbands, the rings and all that kind of stuff. But that is something that you can research for me the next time that we talk Tim. When was the first bald metalhead? When did having short hair become part of the image. Remember the drama when Metallica cut their hair, the entire planet was losing their mind for days and days and days! That whole thing from Samson that if you lose your hair you lose your strength and your masculinity. What a lotta bullocks that is. It’s an important and fun discussion to have. When I talk in the book about noticing that was becoming follicly challenged as they say in commercial …’why don’t you try try blah, blah.’ I said ‘forget that shit, give me a razor.’ Let’s take it from there and move it to here (as he grabs his beard). Having a beard makes you look interesting. It makes your face look interesting.
BraveWords: It grows everywhere else aside from your head! And to answer your question, it could be Angry Anderson from Rose Tattoo.
Halford: “Brilliant. Brilliant. Yes, absolutely brilliant. I remember those very first-ever songs from Rose Tattoo and seeing angry. Because again, there was this thing; he must be a skinhead, or a Nazi or a racist. A lot of bullshit that is. I think this whole bald dome thing has become a metaphor for letting people be who they want to be.”
