In a recent interview with Bandcamp, Faith No More‘s Mike Patton shared the role vocalists play in a band and gave some advice to those who think they own the show.

Patton has been in the industry as the lead vocalist of several bands for a long time. Mike, who has been part of many acts like Faith No More, Dead Cross, and Mr. Bungle, truly knows what a singer’s role should be in a band. Despite his role in those bands, Patton still considers himself a member rather than the frontman at the center.

The seasoned lead singer shared that he still sees himself as a component of the bands that he is a part of. He added that it is crucial to be humble and understand that singers are just a part of the band and they don’t own the show.

Patton shared that he doesn’t push his ideas but rather hears the band members out because, in his eyes, the band doesn’t need him; it only needs his voice. He noted that keeping this stance toward fame and stardom will help singers get far within the industry.

Mike Patton’s advice for being a great vocalist:

“I still see it as ‘I am here to help. I am a component.’ I think that’s important, but let’s be honest: Singers are f*cking idiots. They think they own the f*cking show, but they don’t, okay? That’s one thing I’ve learned over the years: All you have to do is sit back and be a part of the band.

That’s what I’ve tried to do with these guys. I’m not pushing ideas on them because guess what? They’ve got great ideas, and I don’t want to f*ck it up. I’m involved in another project now where it’s the same thing—it’s like, ‘You don’t need me. You need my voice.’ That’s it.”

The vocalist is ready to play his part in Mr. Bungle‘s shows scheduled for December in Chile and Brazil. Patton is also awaiting Dead Cross to release its sophomore album, ‘Dead Cross II’ on October 28.
