dream theater

If you were hoping for a new Dream Theater album in the near future, you're going to have to hang in there just a little bit longer. Guitarist John Petrucci has recently been promoting his second solo LP, Terminal Velocity, so he stopped by for a chat with Eddie Trunk on SiriusXM's Trunk Nation. Trunk—a master at getting hot takes on who's in the studio and when—asked about what's up for Dream Theater in 2023, and Petrucci was clear sighted about the miles the band were gearing up to put in on the road next year.
Petrucci told Trunk "Dream Theater is gonna continue touring in 2023. Just like everybody else, we were shut down for two years and have a lot of catching up to do. We're supporting A View From The Top Of The World. We've done extensive tours of U.S. and Europe, but even… We played two shows only in Asia; we played, like, four shows in South America. There's a lot more ground to cover. So 2023 is gonna be filled with Dream Theater touring; I'm certain of that."
Asked if a new record has been discussed, Petrucci said "We're still working the last record [A View From The Top Of The World, 2021]. I can't see us being back in the studio until roughly this time next year. If you kind of just look forward to next year, you see the way it's gonna lay out, and we've got festivals. Before you know it, it's August. There's not gonna be any studio work done before the fall; I highly doubt it. So a new record wouldn't be [released before] the following year."
Well, there you have it, folks. We're just going to have to wait until 2024 for a new Dream Theater LP. However, Dream Theater has been digging deep into their now-defunct Ytsejam Records catalog this year and reissuing all its contents. This time around, the band has released the Lost Not Forgotten Archives: Images and Words Demos featuring the original four instrumental demos from between 1989 and 1991 that became Images And Words songs, the 1991 ATCO Demos that would ultimately land them a record deal, and a handful of later pre-production demos prior to recording Images And Words. The album is streaming everywhere now.
