Birmingham heroes Black Sabbath, led by singer Ozzy Osbourne and guitarist Tony Iommi, closed the 2022 Commonwealth Games with a teased intro to Iron Man leading into Paranoid. They were joined by Adam Wakeman and drummer Tommy Clufetos, who played on the final tour.
Ozzy rose up from the stage and sounded great, which was wonderful to see given his recent health issues. “I love you all, Birmingham. It’s good to be back,” the Prince of Darkness declared.
Iommi was naturally dressed in black, as was Ozzy, sounded inspired, and his riffing and solo were spot on.
Iommi had opened the Commonwealth Games on 28 July, playing a song called Hear My Voice with London-born saxophonist and rapper Soweto Kinch.
Osbourne’s last appeared onstage at the 2019 American Music Awards, where he performed his duet, Take What You Want, with Post Malone. His last full concert was headlining Ozzfest on New Year’s Eve 2018.
