In a recent interview with Listen Next!, Def Leppard guitarist Phil Collen shared his thoughts about the current generation of artists. He noted that while Foo Fighters are good, they lack the star power Nirvana possessed.

Every generation of bands has its moment in the limelight. They are often compared to the previous ones and criticized about whether they will manage to set their legacy in stone or fade away in rock history. They get compared for their looks, sound, and overall presence in the industry.

Def Leppard guitarist Phil Collen’s recent comments on young acts were no different in terms of comparison. He voiced his skepticism about the new generation of bands’ ability to take on genre-leading bands like Metallica and Guns N’ Roses. He said that none of them have any striking originality.

Phil Collen noted that when you watch Metallica, Guns N’ Roses, or Nirvana, they have the star power. They have the wow factor that makes people turn heads. He added that he could not see this ability and desire in today’s generation of artists. Collen claimed that Foo Fighters are almost an offshoot of Nirvana. Although they are good, they cannot be compared to the big league bands.

Phil Collen’s thoughts on the current generation of artists:

“Metallica’s great; when you see them, there’s a big difference. Guns N’ Roses are awesome. I don’t see that anymore. I don’t see that star power. I don’t see that kind of thing. So that’s what I’m waiting for. There hasn’t been any of that. Nirvana was. Foo Fighters is an offshoot of Nirvana. And I love the Foo Fighters. I think they’re great. But when Nirvana came out, I was, like, ‘Woah, this is amazing.’ The Sex Pistols are amazing. But I’m just waiting, still waiting.”
