Smashing Pumpkins’ Billy Corgan sang his new song titled ‘Photograph’ during his virtual charity concert to raise money for the victims of the mass murder in Highland Park.
On July 4, a mass murder occurred in Highland Park. Seven people passed away, and more than 45 were injured. They found the shooter and charged him with seven first-degree murders.
For nearly two decades, Corgan has lived in the Highland Park area of Chicago, Illinois. Therefore, he decided to hold a benefit concert for victims affected by this tragedy. On July 27, he performed a benefit show called ‘Together and Together Again,’ broadcasted live to help affected communities.
During the benefit concert, Corgan explained the meaning of his new song, ‘Photograph.’ He stated that this song was his response to the tragedy that occurred on the day of the mass murder in Highland Park. He added that the photo becomes meaningful in hindsight after something significant has happened the day the photograph was taken.
In the benefit concert, Billy Corgan said:
“This is my reaction; I guess you could say to what happened. I don’t know if it’s a good song or a bad song, but it certainly expresses the way that I feel. So in the opening scene, I’m explaining to somebody that I found a photograph of us standing on the spot where this horrible thing happened.
It’s as simple as that, how something so simple as a photograph taken on a beautiful day right over here by the ice cream shop where we sometimes go for a fancy sorbet, and suddenly you look at a photograph, and suddenly it has meaning. My god, we were in that spot.”
Billy Corgan and his partner Chloe Mendel reportedly raised a quarter of a million dollars from the live performance. All proceeds from the live stream went to the July 4th Highland Park Shooting Response Fund of the Highland Park Community Fund.
