Avenged Sevenfold’s M. Shadows tweeted about the era of ‘sellout’ bands, noting that he thought The Offspring were sellouts even though he loved their ‘Smash’ album.
M. Shadows is the founding member, songwriter, and vocalist of the heavy metal band Avenged Sevenfold, with whom he has an impressive career. He has been with the band since the early days and has worked on all seven studio albums, worldwide tours, and live performances.
Their seventh and latest studio album, ‘The Stage’ was released in 2016. It was a concept album surrounding the theme of artificial intelligence. Fans and music critics liked the record since, despite being a surprise release, it debuted at number four on the Billboard 200. The group also announced that they had almost finished their eighth studio album, influenced by Kanye West’s soul music.
Recently, M. Shadows tweeted a response to the claims that he called some bands ‘sellouts.’ He noted that there was a time when bands’ sounds became more pop and polished, which is why it became common to call them ‘sellouts.’ The rocker also stated that he called The Offspring ‘sellouts’ at one point, despite loving their latest album ‘Smash’ which was a massive hit then.
The Avenged Sevenfold singer’s words about The Offspring:
“I first heard The Offspring on the world-famous KROQ when I was a kid. I bought their ten million-selling album ‘Smash’ and fell in love with it. By the time their next album came out, I called them ‘sellouts.’ Yep, I was that guy.”
He added:
“Yeah. It was def an era. Punk had such a raw sound, but when NOFX, Bad Religion, and all those epitaphs and fat bands hit the scene, it was more polished. So the old schoolers hated it. The next-gen got even poppier. My fav era is ’90s epitaph and fat bands.”
