Former Metallica bassist Ron McGovney recently posted a tweet in which he argued Leather Charm’s Jim Mulligan‘s drum skills are better than Lars Ulrich’s.

Ron McGovney played with Metallica between October 1981 and December 1982. During his tenure with the band, he often had clashing opinions with Lars Ulrich and Dave Mustaine. Due to growing tensions, he decided to leave on December 10, 1982.

Before Metallica, Ron McGovney was a member of Leather Charm, which was formed in June 1981 by James Hetfield and Hugh Tanner. After McGovney, Jim Mulligan joined the band as the drummer, and they began playing new wave British heavy metal covers.

Recently, Ron McGovney came across a tweet where he saw Metallica play their first original song, ‘Hit the Lights.’ He then tweeted a response, claiming Leather Charm was a bit heavier and faster.

After that, one of his followers asked whether Jim Mulligan was a better drummer than Lars Ulrich and if Troy James was better than Kirk Hammett. As a response, McGovney stated that Mulligan was better than Ulrich while Kirk was better than James.

After seeing Metallica’s ‘Hit The Lights’ performance, Ron McGovney tweeted the following:

“Leather Charm is just a bit heavier. Oh, and a bit faster.”

One of his followers then asked:

“Was Jim Mulligan a better drummer than Lars? Troy James better than Kirk?”

McGovney responded:

Jim was better. Kirk is better.”
