Former Blink-182 member Tom DeLonge recently spoke to Tuna on Toast With Stryker and revealed some similarities between Blink-182’s ‘All the Small Things’ and Metallica’s ‘Master of Puppets.’
‘All the Small Things’ was released as the second single and eighth track from the band’s third studio album, ‘Enema of the State.’ Tom DeLonge composed the song by himself as an ode to his then-girlfriend. The song quickly became a number one hit on various charts and remained the band’s most successful single. The track also appeared in TV shows, films, video games, and advertisements. Naturally, it has been covered many times by many other musicians.
Metallica’s ‘Master of Puppets,’ on the other hand, featured in the band’s 1986 album of the same name. It was written by all four members of Metallica and reflected the destructive effects that the drugs have on an individual’s life. It is one of Metallica’s most popular and also most played songs. Many famous groups, including Trivium, Dream Theater, and Apocalyptica, attempted to cover the songs.
Tom DeLonge revealed that he is not so fond of ‘All the Small Things’ during a recent conversation despite its high popularity. He doesn’t like how he sounds on the track and is still surprised when other young musicians cover and send it to him. He thinks that there are many other good songs they produced, but this song is the most popular one. For DeLonge, it resembles Metallica’s ‘Master of Puppets’ in this respect. He considers that Metallica has better songs than this one as they also have, but it is all up to the listeners’ reactions at the end of the day.
On the similarity between ‘All the Small Things’ and ‘Master of Puppets,’ Tom DeLonge said:
“We have an old Blink song called ‘All the Small Things,’ and I’m like, ‘I sound like I’m f*cking four years old!’ And people still celebrate it. Literally four times a month, there’s a cover band playing that, and someone I know films it and sends it to me. And I go, ‘Really?!’ It’s like Hanson. It’s like these kids playing the old pop-punk. We’ve got a lot of really cool songs in Blink, and it’s weird to me that that’s the one. Like, Metallica has ‘Master Of Puppets,’ and we’ve got ‘All the Small Things.’ We’ve got better ones than that, but whatever!”
