Deftones on Thursday (April 14) finally kicked off their twice-postponed North American tour alongside fellow metal act Gojira, revealing two new live Deftones players in the process. (The tour initially was plotted for 2020 before being postponed to 2021 and again to this year because of the COVID-19 pandemic.)
Last month, longtime Deftones bassist Sergio Vega, also of the post-hardcore outfit Quicksand, shocked fans when he revealed he had parted ways with the Chino Moreno-led band last year. Vega suggested he was never made an official member of Deftones contractually, despite his extended tenure following founding bassist Chi Cheng's career-ending car crash in 2008 and subsequent death in 2013.
Taking Vega's place in Deftones' lineup at the Moda Center in Portland, Ore., on Thursday was bassist Fred Sablan, a musician who performed in Marilyn Manson for several years in the early 2010s. Rumors emerged earlier this week that Sablan was on board.
But concertgoers experienced another surprise when an unidentified additional electric guitar player appeared onstage with Deftones for several songs, per Blabbermouth.
As the gig was Deftones' first back since the release of their latest album, 2020's Ohms, their set saw two live debuts from that effort. B-side "Lovers" also got its live debut. Additionally, fan-favorite Deftones songs "Beware" and "Prayers/Triangles" were performed live for the first time in several years.
Below, see Deftones' setlist from Thursday, followed by some fan-captured footage of the show.
