KISS icon Gene Simmons stood behind his thought that rock music is dead in the course of an interview with Metal Hammer.
Whether rock music is dead or not has been a controversial issue among rock stars since Gene Simmons initiated it in 2014. According to Simmons, because people can easily find the artists’ songs via online platforms, new bands cannot find their place in the music industry. That is why he thought that rock music was dying.
So many rock icons like Tony Iommi, Dee Snider, and Alice Cooper expressed their opinions about this subject. Tony Iommi mentioned that rock music is still there even though it was declared dead years ago. Alice Cooper also stated that new generations learn about iconic rock stars like Aerosmith, Ozzy Osbourne, and Alice Cooper.
Gene Simmons reopened this issue by standing behind his view that rock is dead during a recent interview. Simmons mentioned that even though the fans love rock music, they caused the death of this genre by downloading songs on online platforms. According to him, because of the technology, new bands cannot hold on to their presence in the music industry because everything is free online.
Gene Simmons said in his words:
“I stand by my words: rock is dead. The people that killed it are fans. Fans killed the thing they loved by downloading and file sharing for free. How do you expect somebody who loves the guitar to come into this creative process? You’ve got to invent yourself. And so the rock is dead.”
Rock icons have been talking about whether the rock is dead or not since Gene Simmons first talked about it. Simmons has not changed his opinion because he thinks that online platforms have increased day by day. According to him, it is hard for new generations to create rock music these days because they cannot get paid for their work.
