Papa Roach made major waves in 2000 with their Infest album, specifically the timeless single "Last Resort." Infest has sold over 3 million copies in the United States alone and is easily one of the more successful nü-metal albums of all time.
Though despite finding their initial success with Infest, vocalist Jacoby Shaddix tells Metal Hammer that he really hated the nü-metal genre. He also adds that he hated people comparing him to Limp Bizkit vocalist Fred Durst, saying "I am so much more fucking punk rock than this dude."
"I hated it, I couldn't stand it. Everyone was trying to compare me to Fred Durst and I was like, 'I am so much more fucking punk rock than this dude. He's on the hip hop side.' No disrespect to Fred. I think he's fucking great at what he does, and I dig him."
Shaddix later added that he's come to terms with the genre, saying it was "a new interpretation of what metal music could be and we were pulling inspiration from all over the place." He also calls Faith No More the original nü-metal band, adding "Mike Patton, you fucking motherfucker, you started it." Which is definitely fair given Faith No More's massive 1990 hit "Epic." Though I think Chuck Mosley also deserves some credit too with songs like "We Care A Lot."
