Sum 41 has a brand new double album coming called Heaven And Hell, and the Hell side is pretty metal.
Vocalist and guitarist Deryck Whibley revealed to Rolling Stone that Heaven And Hell is split into a nostalgic pop-punk side on Heaven, and a metal side featuring "tracks closer to the band’s most recent sound" on Hell. Whibley said the new record came out when Universal asked him for any rarities he might have from 2001's All Killer No Filler. Whibley didn't, so he started writing songs in that vein only to find that he had a ton of new ideas.
"Once I had about four or five songs, I was like 'You know what? I like all these. I'm not giving these to anybody," said Whibley. He later added "As I listened to almost all of it, it just kind of dawned on me, 'Did I just make a double record by accident?'"
Frankly, I don't see any reason why Sum 41 couldn't pull off an entire metal album. Records like Chuck and Does This Look Infected? have tons of heavy moments, and even their more recent material goes pretty hard. So yes – I think we should all be excited for the Sum 41 metal record.
