Lacuna Coil vocalist Cristina Scabbia recently spoke to Kerrang and revealed that she has never felt out of place as a woman in the male-dominated rock music scene.

Although there are many men in the rock music scene, the number of female vocalists or musicians is limited. Thus, many women in the industry experience sexism and misogynism or are treated differently from their male colleagues.

However, there are numerous successful and talented female musicians out there, such as Amy Lee of Evanescence, Lzzy Hale of Halestorm, and Alice Cooper’s guitarist Nita Strauss. Moreover, they often try to support women on the rock scene and show others that they exist.

On 2022 International Women’s day, Lacuna Coil’s Cristina Scabbia issued a statement on Kerrang to talk about being a woman in the rock music industry. She stated that although the media pays more attention to her due to her gender, she has never felt out of place for being a female rocker or expected to be treated differently.

Moreover, Scabbia said she feels like a human being, regardless of her sex and gender. She then stated what is important is her skills and whether she is good at doing her job. According to Christina, both men and women should stop competing for the finish line and look towards the same direction together.

In the statement she issued on Kerrang, Cristina Scabbia said the following:

“Looking at it the other way, I can’t deny I’ve definitely had some benefits in a lot of cases/situations, and the media have also paid more attention to me for my appearance and gender.

In reality, though, I’ve never felt out of place for being a woman in the male-dominated music industry, but I’ve also never expected to be treated differently in comparison with my colleagues for simply having a vagina.

Believe me; I’ve been thinking a lot about this. I’ve been wondering if my serenity comes from the fact that I’ve never had serious issues at work and (in life in general) just for being a woman, or if I’ve turned into patriarchy’s handmaid without even realizing it.”

She then continued:

“Maybe being constantly surrounded by men for so long has impacted my awareness of the need for a revolt? I’ve come to the conclusion that I only feel like a human being, just like everyone else. Because that’s what I am, regardless of my sexuality. I’m strong yet delicate. I’m good at doing my job. I know my limits and also my skills.

I feel like the male and female universes are always competing on this endless run to get to the finish line first, to prove their worth, while what we actually need is to just stop looking at each other and start looking towards the same direction, together.”

As a successful woman in the scene, Cristina Scabbia thinks that her gender should not matter and people should focus on her talent and achievements. So, according to the singer, both genders should focus on doing their best instead of competing with each other.
