Ghost lead singer Tobias Forge spoke to Metal Hammer and expressed his thoughts about taking place in ‘The Metallica Blacklist’ with Metallica’s ‘Enter Sandman’ cover.

Metallica released their iconic fifth studio album, generally known as ‘The Black Album’ on August 12, 1991. It became very popular and the band’s best-selling album worldwide, and it produced the band’s well-known songs, ‘Enter Sandman,’ ‘The Unforgiven,’ and ‘Nothing Else Matters.’

Moreover, the band decided to share ‘The Black Album Remastered’ and ‘The Metallica Blacklist,’ which consisted of covers from various artists and bands, such as Ghost, Corey Taylor, Miley Cyrus, and Cage the Elephant, on September 10, 2021, to celebrate its 30th anniversary.

Tobias Forge told the story of how they ended up covering ‘Enter Sandman,’ saying that Metallica asked them to perform the song for the list when they were at The Polar Prize. The vocalist stated that it’s challenging to perform such an iconic song, but he wanted to approach it in a new way to make a difference.

In Forge’s words, he said:

“We’d been asked to play ‘Enter Sandman’ when Metallica was at The Polar Prize a few years back. We said, ‘Can we choose which song?’ They said, ‘Well, you can choose, but we want you to do ‘Enter Sandman.’ If you’re going to open the show, we want you to play their biggest song.’ So when talk of this record came about, it made sense.

It’s hard to cover a song that famous, but I heard a little bit more melody in the chord sequence. So I thought I’d explore that and see if I could flip it into something different – not better, just different. It’s such a rock’n’roll song, too – I wanted our version to swing.”
