During his recent interview with Metal Hammer, Ozzy Osbourne guitarist Zakk Wylde revealed how he discovered Black Sabbath and the band’s ‘terrifying’ album that made even him a Satanist for a while.
Black Sabbath released their compilation album entitled ‘We Sold Our Soul for Rock’ n’ Roll’ on December 1, 1975, in the UK and February 3, 1976, in the US. The album mainly included songs from the first four albums and received positive reviews from the Black Sabbath fans worldwide.
In his conversation, Zakk Wylde unveiled that he started listening to the band with the compilation album at 11 years old and stressed that it wasn’t even a new studio album. He was so terrified that he wanted to choose Satanism over Catholicism, but then he returned to Catholicism.
The famous guitarist stated that he went back to Catholicism to thank God for creating Black Sabbath and helping him listen to these songs. These funny moments that he recalled made him laugh, and it seems like his admiration for the band never ended considering his cover band called Zakk Sabbath and works with a Black Sabbath icon, Ozzy Osbourne.
Wylde said in his interview that:
“‘We Sold Our Soul For Rock’N’Roll…’ Not even a real Black Sabbath record! I was beyond terrified; I’d been raised Catholic, and by halfway through that record, I’d turned full Satanist. By the end, I’d gone back to Catholicism just so I could thank God for creating Black Sabbath, ha ha ha!”
Years after hearing Black Sabbath for the first time, Wylde would have a chance to work with Black Sabbath’s original frontman Ozzy Osbourne as his guitarist. He’s been collaborating with the musician for more than 30 years.
