In a rare and emotional interview with the Još Jedan podcast, 63-year-old metal vocalist Paul Di'Anno (ex-Iron Maiden), who developed sepsis in 2015 and underwent knee surgery in late 2021, opens up about about his health condition, and his relationship with fans, as well as depression and how it affected his songwriting process. He also talks about his time in Iron Maiden, Battlezone, Architects Of Chaoz, and more. Watch below.
During the chat, Di’Anno reveals that he’s been suffering from depression and PTSD.
“I had a lot of time to think about a lot of things, and most of them was thinking about death,” says Paul. “Because I couldn’t see any way out of this, the hole got so deep and so dark and so black.... it was fucking horrendous, man. I didn’t know I had PTSD, but I do, because of this (points at his knee). It is traumatic. I mean, I thought you only got PTSD if you’d been in Afghanistan or Bosnia, stuff like that, but it’s not true. The fucking depression has been terrible, it's really bad, it’s affected everything in my life.”
